The Kvarner region, also known as Kvarner Bay, is a real holiday paradise, situated on the northeastern Adriatic in Croatia. It is pivotal point between the coast, islands and mountains, has distinctive architectural, historical culture and lies in proximity to European centers. Geographically, the Kvarner Bay lies between the Istrian peninsula and North Dalmatia. The Kvarner Bay extends from Opatija, one of the oldest tourist destinations, seaport Rijeka, the Riviera Crikvenica to Senj and even further south.

Central in the Kvarner Bay are numerous islands, of which Krk, Cres, Losinj, Rab, Susak, Unije, Ilovik, Male and Vele Srakane are inhabited. Two islands are spliting, almost equal, the first two places in the category of "Largest Island of Croatia". On place No. 1 is the island of Cres with 405.70 sq km, followed by the island of Krk with 405.22 sq km, which is connected by a bridge with the mainland.

All Islands are surrounded by the 3 big waters: Kvarner, Kvarneric and Velebit channel. "Kvarner", marked the sea area between the Istrian peninsula and the islands of Cres and Unije. The "Kvarneric" lies between the islands of Losinj and Cres in the west and the islands of Rab and Krk on the eastern side. Between the islands of Krk and Rab and the mainland is the „Velebit channel”. This is cause of the frequent storms Bora, one of the most dangerous waters in the world. Partly the coastal road and the bridge to Krk have to be locked because of Bura. The ferry services between the mainland and islands and between the islands are regularly.


In the north sits the mountain region "Gorski Kotar, whose summit range up to 1.500m. In the south rise the foothills of the Velebit range into the sky. Deep blue sea and the mountains in the background form an impressive backdrop, which takes effect to the entire region. Many green covered areas arrange for a good holiday mood. The islands in the Kvarner Gulf are among to the finest sailing areas in Croatia. The picturesque island landscape with numerous coves that can be achieved only from the water, modern marinas, and year-round good wind conditions create the perfect ambience for sailors and motor boat driver.

In the Kvarner region are located the National Parks: National Park Risnjak, Plitvice Lakes National Park, National Park Northern Velebit and the nature parks: Nature Park Ucka, which rope into Istria and Nature Park Velebit, which rope to Northern Dalmatia in the south.

Due to a long tradition in tourism in Croatia, the year-round supply manifold and the special tourist services, everybody get with his different needs and expectations money worth on Kvarner. The cultural-historical heritage of Kvarner is exceptionally interesting and content full and this has resulted in the development of various selective forms of tourism, like for example ethno-tourisms, sacral and cultural tourism. In total, Kvarner has 278 protected cultural localities, of which 117 are historical entities, 161 are historical buildings and complexes. The most numerous is the profane heritage, followed by ethnological, memorial and sacral, then hydro-archaeological and archaeological heritage. Nearly every second or third town, municipality or locality have something to offer their guests in this respect, and one of the most frequently mentioned and set apart monuments is the Bašćanska ploća (stone tablet), a monument to the Croatian language carved in stone from about 1100 A.D. written in transitory type of script, from rounded to squarish Glagolitic script. Along with church ritual manuscripts and texts, the events from everyday social life, as well as legal documents like the Vinodol, Vrbnik and Krk laws were written in Glagolitic script. Also worthy of attention are the numerous Marian shrines among which is the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat above Rijeka, one of the oldest shrines in the world, in which from 1291 to 1294 the holy Nazarethan house was kept. Tourism has a long tradition here and the people are known for their cheerful. It is also the cradle of carnival in Croatia. The Kvarner Bay is orginated in the last ice age (approx. before 20,000 - 30,000 years).
